For those suffering with dental anxiety, a trip to the dentist can be a dreaded event. All too often, individuals put off treatment because of their fear – placing their dental health in jeopardy. Cosmetic and family dentist Scott Brown, DDS, and his highly trained team are aware of the nervous tension many people face when going to the dentist, and we know how to help. We offer various levels of sedation dentistry at our McDonough-based dentistry practice to help individuals with varying degrees of dental phobia stay relaxed and comfortable during their dental procedures. Depending on your own level of dental anxiety, you may be interested in conscious intravenous (IV) or nitrous oxide sedation dentistry.
What is Conscious IV Sedation?
Am I a Candidate for Conscious IV Sedation?
Conscious IV sedation is the administration of an anti-anxiety drug into the blood system during dental treatment. Although IV sedation is also referred to as “sleep dentistry,” you will remain conscious during your procedure. This allows you to be able to communicate with your dentist. While under IV sedation, you will feel relaxed and unconcerned about what is happening. After the anti-anxiety drug wears off, you may not be able to recall much, if anything, about what happened during your procedure.
Many people with moderate to severe levels of dental anxiety make good candidates for conscious IV sedation. It can also be helpful for people who face invasive or complex procedures. Although it is a very safe form of sedation dentistry, conscious IV sedation may not be appropriate for women who are pregnant, individuals who are allergic to benzodiazepines, people who suffer from central nervous system depression, and those with glaucoma.
